Of course, many fans are not pleased with how the Skywalker Saga concluded in The Rise of Skywalker, and they want to see the storylines changed after the Episode 9 was released, as there was also major backlash on Rey's final comments declaring she had becoming a Skywalker.Īs .ukpointed out, rumors have been circulating in the Star Wars fandom that unused Star Wars footage of Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Han Solo could be used for a remake of the sequel trilogy on Disney+. Given how polarizing The Last Jedi was, it would be a bold step to have Johnson continue Rey’s story, but it would certainly take the character into new territory.Since the Star Wars sequel trilogy of movies are officially produced by Lucasfilm and Disney, Rey is considered canon. In addition to these, Rian Johnson is still slated to produce a trilogy. There are also film projects with no publicized details coming from Kevin Feige, Taika Waititi, and J.D. That first date is currently planned for Rogue Squadron, but creative differences have delayed production and may bump it out of that slot. Star Wars film projects are slated from 2023, 2025, and 2027. Star Wars could shine with the opportunity to tell new stories unmoored from tradition and expectation. There is a case to be made that the sequel trilogy had very little chance of success because of the weight of fan expectations. With Star Wars’ tendency to utilize the same characters and settings, again and again, it would be a refreshing change of pace to explore an era with no preexisting work to bind it. Perhaps a new trilogy would explore Rey’s creation of a Jedi Order, or it could follow a time jump and show the adventures of that Order after it is well-established. After all, trilogies have been Star Wars’ bread and butter for four decades. If Rey’s story is set to continue, it will likely happen in a trilogy exploring the era beyond the First Order. This could give Star Wars a Flashpoint-Esque reboot button, but Ridley’s projects will likely tread new ground instead. Ezra Bridger once used the World Between Worlds to pull Ahsoka out of a moment in which she died, thereby changing her future. That said, if they did decide to change this story, the Star Wars universe has a mechanism to accomplish that. Kathleen Kennedy has expressed interest in bringing the characters back in new ways, and it seems unlikely that Disney will expend the resources to rewrite scripts and reassemble actors for a project they have already completed. It’s unlikely that the three projects she signed on for will be a remake of her previous work, though. If you’re hoping to see a do-over on the sequel trilogy, news of Ridley’s return might look like a step in that direction. There’s even a petition with over 5,000 signatures requesting the reboot. Search those terms on reddit or Twitter, and you’ll see several comments to that effect, though they generally don’t garner many conversations. If you spend any time in any Star Wars forums, you know there is a small, but vocal, group that routinely calls for the erasure or rebooting of the sequel trilogy.
